Nairobi Street Retrofit

Redesigning an arterial for safety without widening the road

Visual material from Nairobi Street Retrofit
LocationNairobi, Kenya
Period2025
StatusIndependent design study

Overview

A safer multimodal street within the width already available

This independent before-and-after study tests how a motor-dominated Nairobi arterial could better support transit, walking and protected cycling without adding a single metre of road width.

Challenge

The constraint was not design freedom but how much more an existing street could do within its current corridor. The result is a rigorous illustrative concept, not an approved engineering or statutory design.

Role

We completed the street analysis, multimodal concept design and implementation communication.

Approach
  1. Read the existing street section and current movement priorities
  2. Apply complete-street and road-safety principles
  3. Test protected cycling facilities and transit priority within the same width
  4. Translate the concept into real dimensions and phased implementation notes
Outputs
  • Before-and-after street section
  • Facility dimension guide
  • Intersection principles
  • Phasing notes
What This Demonstrates
  • Complete-street and road-safety principles applied to a real Nairobi arterial
  • Design intent translated into dimensions and phasing
  • Space, speed and safety trade-offs made visible for productive discussion
Where This Applies

Bring this capability to a live brief.

County roads departments, development partners and advocacy groups need concrete, buildable cases for safer streets rather than another general guidance document. We turn road-safety principles into corridor-specific design propositions.
